Paintball glossary
The words paintball players use, explained simply. Most of them come from real fields, and all of them work in Paintballer.
- Aim down sights
- Bringing the marker up to your eye to aim. Shots get much tighter; you move a little slower.
- Angle
- A line from your bunker to where an opponent can appear. Holding an angle means aiming there and waiting.
- Armory
- In Paintballer, the screen where you choose your markers, throwables and upgrades.
- Barrel tag
- Tagging a player out by touching them with your barrel at close range, without shooting.
- Break
- The first seconds of a point, when everyone sprints off the start to their first bunker and shoots the lanes.
- Bunker
- Any piece of cover on the field. On a speedball field bunkers are inflatable and have names by their shape.
- Cake
- A low, round bunker shaped like a layer cake, good for leaning out on either side.
- Can
- A tall cylinder bunker. You can stand behind it and lean out left or right.
- Chopped
- A ball that breaks on your marker. In real paintball that counts as a hit.
- Curve shot
- A ball with spin that bends in the air. In Paintballer you curve shots by leaning while you fire.
- Dorito
- A small triangular bunker, named after the chip. A row of doritos usually lines one side of a speedball field.
- Dorito side
- The side of a speedball field with the doritos, opposite the snake side.
- Elimination
- Tagging a player out. Most modes count them to decide the winner.
- Flag carrier
- In Capture the Flag, the player holding the enemy flag. Escort them home.
- Hopper
- The container on top of a marker that holds the paintballs. When it runs dry, you reload.
- Lane
- A line players shoot across during the break to catch opponents running to their bunkers.
- Lean
- Tilting out of cover to show as little of yourself as possible. Q and E on a keyboard.
- Loader
- The part that feeds balls into the marker. A faster loader lets a semi-automatic marker shoot faster.
- Lob
- A high, arcing shot that drops in behind a bunker.
- Marker
- What paintball players call their paintball gun.
- Mask
- Face and eye protection, the one piece of gear you never take off on a real field. In the game, a look you can choose.
- Maya
- A tall pyramid-shaped bunker, often in the middle of a speedball field.
- Out
- Being hit. One hit and you're out, until you come back or until the next round.
- Peek
- Looking out of cover for a moment to find opponents. Never peek the same side twice in a row.
- Pre-aim
- Aiming at the spot where an opponent will appear before they appear, so you only have to pull the trigger.
- Pump
- A marker you pump by hand between shots, like the Slowhand. Slow, but very accurate.
- Rate of fire
- How many balls a marker can fire per second.
- Semi-automatic
- One ball per pull of the trigger, as fast as you can pull. The Bramble is semi-automatic.
- Slide
- Diving into a bunker at a run. In Paintballer, sprint and then crouch.
- Snake
- A long, low bunker that runs down one side of a speedball field. You crawl it to get close.
- Snake side
- The side of a speedball field with the snake, opposite the dorito side.
- Snap shooting
- Popping out of cover, firing a shot and going straight back in.
- Speedball
- Fast tournament paintball on a small, flat field of inflatable bunkers. One life per point.
- Spray
- In Paintballer, a picture you paint on a wall. In real paintball, firing a lot of balls without aiming.
- Start box
- Where your team waits before the horn. In Capture the Flag your flag lives there.
- Temple
- A tall bunker shaped like a step pyramid, with good cover to both sides.
- The fifty
- The centre line of a speedball field, fifty feet from each start. Bunkers on the fifty are the most fought over.
- Trade
- When you get an opponent out and their teammate gets you straight after. A good trade is still a win for your team.
- Wiping
- Wiping paint off after a hit to stay in. It is cheating on real fields, and impossible in Paintballer.
- Woodsball
- Paintball played in the woods, among trees, logs and forts, usually on bigger fields than speedball.
